PCB to a Hybrid

Hybrid Electronics has recently converted an entire functional printed circuit board (PCB) used in the telemetry industry into a thick film hybrid. The benefits to the customer were size, performance, encapsulation, intellectual property protection and a lower cost.

  • The size of the fibreglass board used for the PCB was 28cm2, it is now 15cm2 on ceramic.

  • The resistors (approximately 50 in total) that were surface mounted onto the PCB are now printed onto the ceramic.

  • The unit was a through hole surface mount circuit board.  It is now a multilayer surface mount ceramic with a ground plane on the back.

  • The PCB was mounted in a box however now the unit is fully encapsulated, protecting it from moisture, vibration, corrosion and heat.

  • The unit as a thick film hybrid rather than a PCB, now provides security against reverse engineering.

  • The unit overall is now lower cost as a thick film hybrid rather than a PCB.

It’s not magic. A PCB can be converted into a hybrid.
It is more reliable and saves you money!  [Top]

High Value Resistors

Hybrid Electronics manufacture thick film hybrid dynode resistor chains for high vacuum photomultiplier amplifiers & electron multipliers.

They can be external to the vacuum system or they can be incorporated into mechanical assemblies inside the high vacuum system. Dynode resistor chains require very stable, high value resistors, which can withstand high voltages, and, if incorporated inside the vacuum system, can be baked and subject to ionic bombardment.

In addition to the above requirements, thick film hybrid circuits can be tailored to be an integral part of the mechanical dynode assembly.

In this high vacuum application, ceramic active and passive hybrid circuits are used where standard printed circuit boards are completely impractical.

We believe that Stainless Steel hybrids will add another dimension to this technology, especially for the innovative photomultiplier & electron multiplier designer.

Low Noise Amplifier

wpe1.jpg (6082 bytes)Hybrid Electronics has been greatly involved in the development and launch of a Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) for Television manufacturers. The LNA improves the picture quality for weak signals while still holding an acceptable intermodulation figure. The application of precision high frequency actively trimmed resistors and the printing of single layer capacitors up to 1nF has ensured the competitive advantage of the technology. Other benefits of the thick film hybrid are miniaturisation and encapsulation thus making it difficult to reverse engineer. Further applications of this technology include satellite and communication receivers.   [Top]

Water Pump Flow Controller

wpe2.jpg (5845 bytes)The water pump flow controller, incorporating a thick film hybrid substrate, designed jointly by Hybrid Electronics and our customer gives strong, even water pressure. This enables you to have a great shower! Also the flow controller is designed to automatically turn the pump off if the supply of water is insufficient for the pump to operate. This protects the pump from dry running. The latest model also has a unique cold start feature which enables the pump to function in the most extreme saltwater environments as well as reducing standby power and heat. The benefit of the thick film hybrid is calibration precision, wider temperature range of operation and encapsulation for the high moisture environment.   [Top]

Signal Converter

wpe3.jpg (3596 bytes)This signal Converter, converts AC voltage measurement to a standard 4mA¨20mA current. One benefit of the hybrid is the precision of the resistor matching for gain adjustment (0.2% ratio). In addition the precision activecalibration of the gain and offset of the final circuit reduces calibration time and gives long term stability.    [Top]

Train Data Logger

wpe4.jpg (3064 bytes)One of our customers manufacture data loggers for electric trains. The data loggers measure and record speed, distance, all operational signals and air pressures. The customer is using a package of hybrids i.e. digital data input hybrids and analogue data input hybrids because of their modularity, reliability, precision and size. The hybrids have improved the reliability, stability and measuring accuracy of the data loggers. Other benefits of the hybrids include the quality of the resistor matching and their encapsulation in epoxy resulting in reliability in difficult environments of both high and low temperatures, moisture and vibration. Finally, unlike printed circuit boards which are only tested on completion, hybrids are progressively tested throughout the entire assembly process.    [Top]

Crank Angle Sensor

wpe5.jpg (4023 bytes)A customer of Hybrid Electronics manufacture crank angle sensors for the automotive electronic repair industry. For the electronic micro-circuitry, the customer needed precision performance, wide temperature operation and encapsulation - all at a competitive price. Hybrid Electronics are able to meet these criteria with a thick film hybrid. With hybrids, the resistors are printed with special ink onto the ceramic substrate rather than being soldered onto a printed circuit board. As a consequence, the hybrids are fired and trimmed to the customer’s precise resistor specification value. The hybrids maintain their accuracy over a wide temperature range as the ceramic substrates have excellent thermal rating capabilities.   [Top]

Irrigation System

wpe6.jpg (3864 bytes)Hybrid Electronics manufacture an irrigation control hybrid for a customer. The hybrid integrated circuit in conjunction with a custom made probe detects the irrigation flow front. This is used to determine when to turn off the particular irrigation loop under power and transfer power to the next loop in a chain of multiple irrigation loops. The benefit of the hybrid for this product is its small size, modularity and full encapsulation for burial in the soil. This is a major cost saving as it does not need to be mounted in a hermetic box as would be required for a printed circuit board.   [Top]

Baggage X-Ray Machines

wpe7.jpg (4092 bytes)One of our overseas customers are using thick film hybrids for x-ray detector amplifiers in baggage x-ray machines at airports. Many hybrids are used in the baggage machines. The benefit of the thick film hybrids is in the versatility of resistor performance and the operating environment range of the ceramic substrate. Hybrid Electronics have achieved price savings and quality improvement over international competitors and is working with the customer on other hybrid circuit projects.   [Top]

Colour Pixels

wpe5.jpg (4129 bytes)Would you like to see an LED screen with no visual distortion, have infinite variety and clarity of colour? Yes! Hybrid Electronics and Persistent Vision have developed a method of manufacturing large colour displays by calibrating pixels containing red, blue and green LED’s to provide uniform intensity and colour. Our particular interest is in manufacturing linear arrays of pixels (16 in a strip of 3.2"). The benefits are consistent colour and brightness, maximum LED life with lowest mean currents, higher quality displays, and lower cost due to the reduction in LED specifications.    [Top]  Click here to see an example of our technology at work.

Energy Saving Lighting

wpe6.jpg (3325 bytes)One of our customers is using a thick film hybrid control module for energy saving in large fluorescent light installations used in shops, warehouses and offices. The reason for using a hybrid rather than a PCB is size, resistor accuracy, reliability and circuit security at a competitive price as the customer is expecting large export sales. In the long term the large component assembly of the product will be manufactured overseas under license and the hybrid module will be exported at low cost.   [Top]

"Muffler" Earmuffs

wpe1.jpg (3541 bytes)With our customer, we are making a noise limiting circuit designed to be fitted into earmuffs that lets you hear while it protects you, doing both jobs at the same time! It allows a wide variety of users to hear normal conversations and sounds when noise levels are below 82 dB(A). When environmental noise exceeds this level the new calibrated stereo circuit switches off instantly. Users then have the full protection capabilities of their earmuffs until the noise levels decrease below 82 dB(A), when the circuit automatically switches itself on again. Encapsulation of the hybrid circuit means that it will operate reliably under extreme hot, humid and dusty environmental conditions - conditions where standard PCB electronics are subject to corrosion and failure.   [Top]

Telecommunication Active Filters

wpe5.jpg (4129 bytes)Hybrid Electronics have the technology and test equipment for developing high performance active filters for telephone system applications up to 20Khz frequency. Multipole low pass, band pass and precision switch capacitor filters can be made on a single in line ceramic package. The benefit in quality and thermal performance are due to the active circuit calibration and the close thermal matchings of the resistor elements. [Top]

Cruise Control Thermostat

wpe5.jpg (4129 bytes)Do you have a cruise control function on your car? Now, apply that concept to your kettle or urn and you have a cruise control thermostat for boiling water! Hybrid Electronics have recently developed this concept for a customer. The thermostat enables water to be kept at a constant temperature of 96oC. Other applications of the technology include coffee makers and food warmers. Practical benefits of the thermostat are:

* No fuss, once a day on/off switching

* Reduced electricity usage

* Reduced water usage

* No steam release into the room (because you forgot to turn the thermostat knob down!).[Top]
